The Profile of the European Film Market

Harnessing the energy of Berlin and the passion for film, the European Film Market is the business epicentre of one of the most important international film festivals in the world, the Berlinale.

Every February the EFM opens the grand doors to the Martin-Gropius-Bau and welcomes over 9,500 producers, buyers, sales agents, distributors, exhibitors and financiers to the first major film market of the year. It’s the first date in the industry’s calendar and regarded as an early indicator for the new film year. Our trusted organization and commitment to quality content from around the world brings together the right people at the right place and time, inspiring the conversations and connections that are the cornerstone of the business.

Making The Connections

Our goal at the EFM is to help you make the connections. Together with our partners, we are building on the success of our networking initiatives that promote collaborations and provide platforms for productions in development. Whether you are a first-time filmmaker or a seasoned industry professional, our series of events, panels, screenings and talks make connecting at the Market both relaxed and rewarding.

Discovering new and emerging talent is one of the things we do best, and for you it’s as easy as walking across the street to the Berlinale Co-Production Market. Here, international producers and financiers work together to match partners with handpicked projects during an intensive two and a half day event.

Drama Series Days, the initiative launched in 2015 from the European Film Market and the Berlinale Co-Production Market, is a platform for producers, broadcasters, buyers and distributors of series to meet, network and get down to business.Image

In addition to the regular market screenings, the EFM proudly presents a programme of high-quality television series as well as documentary series at the Market. With a focus on Europe, these market screenings are highlighting series from Germany, Scandinavia and the UK as well as North America and trends from around the world.

EFM Industry Debates, in cooperation with The Hollywood Reporter, Screen International and Variety, brings together international experts for three panel discussions focused on the current and future issues facing the industry. These high-profile events are presented by IFA.

DocSalon promotes networking and exchange among buyers, sellers, directors and producers of documentaries. Established in 2009 and formerly known as Meet the Docs, the initiative is a collaboration between the EFM and European Documentary Network (EDN).

At the centre of Europe’s most exciting startup hub, the EFM takes leading entrepreneurs based in Europe and connects them with the film and audiovisual media industries. EFM Startups, successfully launched in 2015, gives EFM visitors the opportunity to tap in to carefully selected startup companies, who can provide the technical know-how to implement new production, distribution or marketing strategies or help them develop new ideas.

The EFM Producers Hub provides a meeting and working area for producers attending the EFM. It offers an exclusive networking space and features free consultancy from industry professionals as well as the recently launched “Presentations & Talks” where selected speakers introduce projects and ideas relevant to producers and their workflows.

At the Berlinale Talents Market Hub, EFM visitors get a first look at the 40 films developed during the Berlinale Talents Project Labs, presented by the selected sales and distribution talents at their stand in the Martin-Gropius-Bau. This initiative is in cooperation with Berlinale Talents.

LOLA at Berlinale is the EFM’s presentation of films long listed in the categories of feature, children’s and documentary film for the German Film Awards (aka Lola). The series is a joint project of the Berlin International Film Festival, German Films and the German Film Academy.
